Material, place and purpose

Diane Ward-Elms is a ceramic artist working from her London studio Earth, Clay & Kiln. Her pieces evolve from natural materials and considered design — creating modern, handcrafted ceramics that connect earth, hand, and home. Each piece is unique, shaped by the quiet dialogue between clay and maker. Diane’s inspiration maps the meeting points between material, place, and purpose.

The ceramic shown is from Diane’s latest commission. Inspired by the ground underfoot in The New Forest. Many also feel the pot looks like it has been salvaged from an ancient shipwreck complete with marine encrustations. Coiled from crank clay, with porcelain, moss and fern additions, and glazed in rhodes white with oxides. The pot rises to a height of 63 cm and features a 30 cm diameter opening at the top.
