Behind the clay
Diane lives in London but was made in Yorkshire, where an early connection to landscape, material, and making shaped her creative outlook. She studied at the London School of Print, beginning her professional life as a graphic artist with a strong foundation in visual language and design.
Her career unfolded in two distinct halves. The first was rooted in creative practice; the second led her into first response emergency services, where focus, resilience, and interaction with human fragility became central. These qualities now quietly inform her approach to making.
Now early retired, Diane has returned to clay, working from her studio Earth, Clay & Kiln — a space grounded in respect for raw materials, process, and transformation. Her practice embraces the elemental journey from earth to object through fire, valuing patience, imperfection, and the marks left by the hand. Each piece reflects a balance between discipline and intuition, shaped by a lifetime of observation and craft.
Diane accepts a limited number of commissions through her studio, Earth, Clay & Kiln Each piece is developed through conversation and careful consideration, resulting in hand-crafted ceramic work that reflects both the client’s intent and the natural character of the material.
The ceramic shown is again inspired by the ground underfoot at Canada Common in The New Forest. Slab and coiled in stoneware and glazed in new black and volcano. The pot stands 46cm high with a diameter at the top of 13cm.
